Hardwood Floor Refinishing

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

A hardwood floor refinishing is never easy, especially when you consider how much of an inconvenience that it could give. However, it is also necessary, and people who are concerned about how good their houses look will recognize just how important this is.
Given this, it is also important to know that the hardwood floor refinishing is very important, and you will need to keep certain things in mind if you want to get it done the right way.
These factors will need to be settled before you can a contractor:

Know whether you will need a full refinishing

If your floor doesn’t have deep gouges and there are no signs of complete wearing off, then it might be better for your hardwood floor refinishing to be done partially. Instead of the full thing, the flooring contractor could just sand the existing finish (a process that is known as screening), then apply the new finish over the top.
Some call it a maintenance coat, others call is a screen and poly job. Regardless of what it is called, it could save you half the cost, so look into the possibility of having it done.

Consider the color as well

If your hardwood floor has a rich, deep color, then there is a high probability that this color isn’t the original color of the wood itself. The manufacturers could have added a stain, or it could have been added at the installation or last hardwood floor refinishing step.

The stain won’t be affected by the screen and poly, but if you will be having a full hardwood floor refinishing, then the contractors will need to take out the stain entirely. So, your floor will have a lighter color after the job has been done. The only way to have the same color will be to match the original color, although you could choose a new color as well.
Note that the addition of stain could decrease costs significantly as well.

You might have to leave your place for a bit

There is also a high chance that you will need to leave your property for a few days while the hardwood floor refinishing is being done. You can’t walk on the floor while it is wet, and given the fact that sanding will take a few days, then you will most likely need to leave for a while.
For a sand and poly job, you will need to leave for a day or two. For a full refinishing project, then you will need to vacate for three days to a week.

Keep the baseboard in mind as well

A lot of time, flooring contractors end up damaging the baseboard a little bit with the sanders. So, to optimize your experience, you will most likely need to touch up the paint a bit. You might not want to hire a painter to come and handle little jobs like this, but since it won’t cost much, you might want to consider it.
